Woody Patterson’s art speaks to the simple beauty of line, color and materials. Informed by the physicality of technology, assemblies are like math in motion: conceptual explorations that result in elegant, refined solutions. Meditative works are serene from afar, but his precise inlay process draws the viewer in to decipher textural subtleties and dimension. Patterson repurposes antiquated technology and promotes the collaboration with more spontaneous and emotionally inspired imagery.
Artist Statement
One of the most interesting and counterintuitive components of my process is minimal planning and preconception. One of my greatest challenges is balancing technical, meticulous and exacting efforts with those of spontaneity, intuition, and improvisation. Perhaps the constant compositional assessment and adaptation throughout the process is essential for maintaining a lively and uncontrived resolution. Organization and maintaining a logical step-by-step process is important for technical success, and that is always a challenge for an assertive and delicate creative side. I cannot let one side completely take over, however I need both unencumbered and inspired to succeed. That same relationship is applied to the physical incorporation of unconventional elements with those of art. In my experience, ambiguity and balance is more difficult to achieve than allowing one process superiority. Change is constant in our world and my assemblies attempt to communicate an equitable and mindful experience. Of course change is constant and ideally progressive and acclimating in positive and effective way is beneficial for us all.
Biography
Woody Patterson discovered art at an early age, becoming familiar with many mediums and techniques. Later, in college, he combined fine art and business interests with an emphasis on visual communication in preparation for a career in graphic design and advertising. After his education, he resided in Atlanta, Georgia embarking on a profession in advertising as an art/creative director. Eventually, he returned to Alabama and, in 2012, began dedicating his efforts solely to fine art. Throughout his life, he had a propensity to be minimal and subtle with paintings, a distinct departure from his linear commercial style, but, in 2015, after discovering a cache of abandoned technology, that changed. The experience ignited his exploration of the virtual world’s physical side and began to thoroughly utilize his unique and gifted attributes. Those repurposed and unconventional materials highlighted those abilities: improvisation, ingenuity, problem solving, craftsmanship, etc., and a form of expression evolved that is more inclusive, less about external influences and more about personal potential. Patterson attributes his uniqueness to his ability to involve a multitude of personal talents and abilities into his process. Patterson resides in Birmingham, Alabama with his wife and exhibits throughout the United States.
