Stephen Brook was born in London in 1957 and after leaving school began working as a commercial artist in a London art studio designing advertisements for newspapers, including hand drawn illustrations. In 1977, Brook had a drawing accepted for a group show of east end artists at the prestigious Whitechapel Gallery in London. Stephen has exhibited in numerous galleries both in the UK and the U.S. and his work has appeared at Art Expo and the Affordable Art Fair in New York. He recently completed a residency at the Art Academy in London.
Brooks’s work often portrays city life, particularly people going about there daily lives, acknowledging Edward Hopper as a major influence. In his distinctive style he depicts crowds of people or empty side streets at night with an atmospheric quality reminiscent of stage or film set.
From time to time Stephen paints life at the beach particularly while traveling on holidays. Along with painting Stephen has a great love of printmaking (dry point etching) and enjoys experimenting in and learning a wide variety of media and techniques.
